Man Identified as Person Killed Near Tarzana While Running on 101 Freeway
TARZANA, CA (October 15, 2019) – Danuka Silva was identified by authorities as the person who was struck and killed on Monday morning by a California Highway Patrol vehicle as he ran across the 101 freeway near Tarzana. The October 13 incident occurred in the freeway’s eastbound lanes, close to the exit for Balboa Boulevard.
The time was roughly after 3:30 a.m.
Reports say the incident began when an Uber driver picked up two men in West Hollywood who were described as friends in reports. The destination of the riders was Topanga, the driver said.
According to the driver, while he was driving, the two men began to fight physically. One of the men sat in the front passenger seat. The other man—identified later by the Los Angeles County Coroner as Danuka Silva, 30 years old and a resident of Northridge—sat in the rear of the vehicle.
According to the driver’s account in reports, the men began to punch one another. The driver stopped on the freeway’s westbound shoulder.
Reports say that Silva left the vehicle, leaped over the divider in the center of the freeway, and began to run across the lanes that travel east.
A California Highway Patrol vehicle, which was en route to the driver regarding the incident with the Uber passengers, struck Silva. Responders pronounced Silva deceased at the incident site.
A CHP officer inside the patrol vehicle suffered injuries that were described as minor. The officer was identified only as a resident of Woodland Hills, 48 years old. His name has not been reported.
The identity of the Uber driver has not been reported. The identity of the other Uber passenger has also not been reported, including his name, age, and city of residence.
Investigators are continuing their work to gather information and details regarding the incident to understand it.
