Wrong-way Crash in Sylmar Kills Two People; Injures Three Others
SYLMAR, CA (December 28, 2018) – A wrong-way collision in Sylmar on the 5 Freeway early in the morning on Friday killed two people and injured three other people. The December 28 accident occurred close to the ramp that transitions the 5 Freeway northbound to the 14 Freeway northbound.
The time was roughly 3:30 a.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, three vehicles were involved in the collision. One of the vehicles—describd as a Honda Accord—had been heading the wrong way from Golden Valley Road. Golden Valley Road is located roughly 4 miles from where the collision occurred.
Two people who had been traveling in the Honda—identified as men who may have been in their 20s or 30s—died in the crash. Their names and cities of residence have not yet been reported.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said one person, who had been traveling in a second vehicle—is in critical condition. The types of injuries suffered by that person have not yet been reported. The person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence have also not yet been reported. The type of vehicle that person was traveling in is not known.
Two other people suffered injuries in the accident, and were taken to the hospital. The types of injuries the people suffered, as well as their names, ages, gender, and cities of residence have not yet been reported. It is not clear from reports if the two other injured people were traveling in a different vehicle, nor has the type of the third vehicle involved in the crash been described.
It is also not clear if anyone else was traveling in the vehicles that collided who may not have been injured.
Investigators are examining the details, information, and evidence of the crash to find out why it happened. They said it looks like speed and alcohol may have played a role.
