Interstate 5 was in quite a bit of disarray and havoc this Friday morning. A traffic collision caused the California Highway Patrol to close the southbound lanes of the 5 north freeway going north of Oceanside near San Diego.

A flat bed truck and three big rigs hauling propane and other flammable materials crashed into each other about two miles south of Basilone Road. Due to the gas and leakage that occurred after the impact on the big rigs, a fuel spill also occurred. The CHP was forced to close the freeway down on that side and included all those lanes in order to clean up the fuel spill safely and efficiently. Along with police and fire fighting assistance, hazardous-material crews have been dispatched to help with the cleanup.

A massive back-up of traffic and vehicles that are stuck on a freeway that resembles a parking lot more than a freeway at this point, has been caused by the closure of the southbound side of Interstate 5. The closure was reported around 7:18 a.m. Officers began allowing motorists to use the side or shoulder of the road to get around the blockage by 8:27 a.m.

It is unclear how the accident occurred, but the sides of the big rigs were impacted and punctured in the accident. The scene was a complete mess. Luckily, the flat bed truck did not topple over and create an even worse situation for drivers struggling to beat Friday morning traffic. No one was certain as to any other details regarding the accident, including if there were any injured victims, the condition of the drivers and the exact timing of the accident itself.

The CHP plans to investigate the cause of the accident and ascertain whether or not the response was adequate and appropriate. Every precaution has been taken due to the risk of fire or worse with the spilled fuel.
