Small Plane Crash at Airport Kills Student and Flight Instructor in Santa Monica, CA
SANTA MONICA, CA (September 9, 2022) – On Thursday afternoon in Santa Monica, a small plane crash at the Santa Monica Airport killed a student and a flight instructor. The September 8 crash occurred on Donald Douglas Loop in the 3300 block.
The time was roughly 2:40 p.m., the Santa Monica Fire Department said.
The plane–described as a single-engine, two-seat Piper sport plane–crashed, for reasons that are not known. Reports say the plane had been inbound to the airport and touched down.
After touching down, the plane suddenly traveled upward, reports say, and then crashed.
Responders found the two occupants of the plane deceased at the crash site in the wreckage of the plane.
The identities of the two people–including their names, ages, genders, and cities of residence–have not been reported.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are working to understand the crash and why it happened.
