Motorhome and Semi Collide on Highway 46 Near Shandon, Killing Man, Seriously Injuring Another
SHANDON, CA (March 17, 2020) – On Sunday night, a collision on Highway 46 near Shandon killed a man and seriously injured another. The March 15 incident occurred on the eastbound side of the highway, near the Highway 41 intersection, and roughly two miles to the east of it.
The time was approximately 8:15 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say vehicle—described as a motorhome—had been traveling west on the highway. In an area near Antelope Road, the motorhome traveled into the lane of oncoming traffic, for reasons that are not known.
The motorhome went into the path of a big rig, and though the truck’s driver attempted to miss the motorhome, reports say, the vehicles crashed into each other. The collision sent the truck off the roadway. The motorhome ended up on the freeway’s north shoulder.
Responders arrived and found the person who had been driving the motorhome died at the incident site. The person was identified as a man 84 years old, and a resident of San Luis Obispo. His name has not been reported.
Responders transported the truck driver to a hospital. He suffered injuries that were described as major. His current condition is not known. His identity has not been reported.
Investigators are working on understanding why the crash happened.
