Serious Truck Accident At Newhall Pass

Nine big rigs collided today in two crashes in the tunnels on the truck bypass route in the Newhall Pass, and one driver was hospitalized after being trapped in the wreckage for more than two hours.

The collisions, tentatively blamed on speeding over what could have been wet roads, occurred on the southbound Golden State Freeway at the southbound Antelope Valley Freeway, with the first reported incident occurring at 3:07 a.m.
The initial crash involved four trucks, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Traffic initially stopped behind the first crash, but then a second crash that occurred involving five big rigs.
More than two-and-a-half hours after the crash, firefighters were still working to free the trapped driver. He suffered moderate to major injuries and was transported to a local hospital after he was finally extricated from his rig.
The cause of the initial crash is still under investigation, but weather may have been a factor since it was sprinkling at the time.
The southbound truck route was closed at the scene of the crash, according to the CHP. It is expected to remain closed until this afternoon.
