Separate Collisions on 5 Freeway in San Clemente Kills Driver

SAN CLEMENTE, CA (August 7, 2018) – A man died on the 5 Freeway in San Clemente Saturday afternoon after his vehicle crashed and rolled over. The August 4 accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on a section of freeway close to Basilone Road.
The victim, who was only identified as 25-year-old resident of San Clemente, had been driving a Chevrolet Suburban SUV and heading north, California Highway Patrol said.
For reasons that are not known, the driver swerved off the road, headed up an embankment, and rolled over on the freeway’s right shoulder. His SUV was partly blocking the lane next to the shoulder.
After stopping there, the SUV was hit by a vehicle described as a Nissan Rogue.
Good Samaritans found that the man who had been driving the SUV was not responsive, and they helped him until medics arrived from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department.
The man died at the scene of the accident.
Investigators do not know if the driver had exited his vehicle, or if the impact from the collision threw him from it. It did not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
No details about the condition of the driver of the Nissan were available. The Nissan’s driver was identified only as a 46 year old.
Investigators are continuing their examination of the accident details.
