Driver Suspected of DUI Hits and Injures Seal Beach Police Officer
SEAL BEACH, CA (October 12, 2020) – On Saturday afternoon, a driver suspected of DUI struck and injured a Seal Beach police officer. The October 10 incident occurred on Pacific Coast Highway near Mariner Drive.
The time was roughly 3:15 p.m., according to Seal Beach Police.
Reports say the officer had been engaged in a traffic stop, having pulled a vehicle over The officer was had been standing near where his patrol vehicle was parked when he was struck.
A vehicle–described as a Ford F-150–is reported to have struck the back end of the patrol vehicle. The collision knocked the officer to the ground, according to reports.
The incident was witnessed by person who had been driving by the area, and who stopped to help and call for responders.
The witness was identified as a person who volunteers at the police department. The witness has not been identified.
Responders arrived and took the officer to a hospital in the area. The officer is reported to have suffered injuries that were described as moderate. The current condition is not known. The officer’s identity as not been reported.
The person who had been driving the Ford pickup truck is reported to have tried to flee the scene on foot. Huntington Beach police officers took him into custody.
He was identified as Kenneth Jacob Lopez, a resident of Huntington Beach, 30 years old. Authorities arrested him on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, and felony hit-and-run.
Investigators are continuing to gather information and details regarding the crash.
