Deadly Wrong-Way Crash Shuts Down Part of the 241 Freeway Near Orange
ORANGE, CA (May 10, 2025) — In the Santiago Canyon area, a deadly wrong-way crash involving multiple vehicles forced the closure of northbound lanes on State Route 241 early Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash was reported at approximately 1:14 a.m. near Santiago Canyon Road and involved at least two vehicles — a black BMW 335 and a dark-colored Honda Civic. Authorities said the collision, classified as a major incident, resulted in one vehicle overturning, with one occupant reportedly trapped inside.
One Driver Was Pronounced Dead At The Scene
The driver of the Honda Civic was pronounced dead at the scene. The Orange County Coroner’s Office was called shortly afterward at 1:44 a.m. Emergency responders treated five individuals from the BMW for injuries, though their conditions have not yet been disclosed.
All northbound lanes of SR-241 in Santiago Canyon were shut down following the crash, prompting CHP to issue a SigAlert at 1:37 a.m. To alleviate congestion, the No. 3 Lane was later reopened while lanes 1 and 2 remained closed for investigation and debris cleanup. Traffic was temporarily diverted onto southbound SR-133 and other alternate routes.
By approximately 3:50 a.m., all lanes were cleared and reopened to the public.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
