Brush Fire in Santiago Canyon Ignited Following Crash of Suspected DUI Driver
SANTIAGO CANYON, CA (October 24, 2019) – A brush fire began burning in Santiago Canyon early in the morning on Thursday after a driver smashed into a power pole. The October 24 incident occurred on East Santiago Canyon Road, close to where the 241 Freeway is located.
The time was roughly a little before 5:00 a.m., according to the Orange County Fire Authority.
Reports say the vehicle went out of the driver’s control, for reasons that are not known. The vehicle smashed into a power pole, and erupted in flames. The fire started to burn brush in the area.
Responders transported the person who had been driving the vehicle to a hospital in the area. The man suffered injuries that included a collar bone that was broken, the California Highway Patrol said. His current condition is not known.
The driver was identified as 26 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported. Reports say authorities arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
Five acres burned in the incident. According to reports, buildings were not burned.
Investigators are continuing to collect details and information.
