Driver Strikes Pedestrian in Santee and Later Returns to Crash Site

SANTEE, CA (May 8, 2019) – A driver, who is suspected of hitting and injuring a a person who had been walking near an intersection in Santee on Tuesday morning, left the accident site. The driver returned to the site not long after, and was arrested. The May 7 incident occurred close to where Riverview Parkway and Magnolia Avenue intersect.

The time was roughly a little after 5:00 a.m., according to Chris Steffen. Steffen is a lieutenant with the San Diego County Sheriff.

Reports say the victim—identified as a man 32 years old—had been traveling in a vehicle with his brother. Also traveling in the vehicle was a friend of the victim’s brother. The victim and his brother were arguing, and the victim exited the vehicle close to Chubb Lane, according to Steffen.

The victim was heading southbound on foot in lanes of traffic on North Magnolia Avenue. The two other men followed the victim in the vehicle and attempted to convince him to re-enter it. As his brother and the friend were talking to him, the victim was hit by a vehicle that had been traveling north on North Magnolia Avenue. According to Steffen, the driver then fled the accident site.

Respondents transported the injured man to Sharp Memorial Hospital. He suffered serious trauma to his head, and his condition was described as serious. His identity, including name and city of residence, has not been reported. The identity of his brother and the friend have also not been reported.

Reports say the person who had been driving the vehicle that hit the victim returned to the accident site within 30 minutes of the incident. The driver was in a vehicle that was not the one involved in the crash. According to Steffen, the driver suspected in the incident was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. The identity of the driver, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.

Investigators are continuing with their work in the examination of the details.
