Santee Crash with Big Rig Sends Car to Fall 50 Feet into San Diego River
SANTEE, CA (March 11, 2021) – Early in the morning on Wednesday near Santee, a crash with a big rig sent a car to fall 50 feet from a bridge and down into the San Diego River. The March 10 incident occurred on State Route 52 on the westbound side of the roadway, close to Mast Boulevard.
The time was roughly 6:30 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue said.
A car–which has not been described–and a big rig had collided before the car fell from the bridge, but the manner in which the crash occurred has not been described.
People who witnessed the crash hurried to help the driver who was trapped in the car. Reports say the Good Samaritans broke the windows to free the driver, and cut the seatbelts.
According to one of the Good Samaritans, identified in reports as William Sarmento, the driver was lucky the vehicle had landed on the passenger’s side. If it had landed on the driver’s side, Sarmento said, according to reports, the river would have been up to the woman’s head.
The woman was able to exit the car after she was freed. Responders arrived and transported her to the hospital, according to Dave Seneviratne, who is a battalion chief with San Diego Fire-Rescue.
The types of injuries the woman suffered, and her current condition, are not known. Her identity has not been reported.
it is not known who the driver of the big rig had been when the crash occurred, nor if the person was hurt in the incident.
Investigators are working to understand the crash.
