Motorcycle and Car Involved in Fiery Crash in Santa Ana, Killing Two People
SANTA ANA, CA (January 3, 2019) – A fiery crash involving a car and a motorcycle on Wednesday afternoon in Santa Ana killed two people. The January 2 accident occurred on Raitt Street.
The time was roughly 1:30 p.m.
According to the Santa Ana Police Department, the collision involved a motorcycle—that was reported to have been going at a fast speed—and a Dodge Charger. Reports say that the motorcycle hit the car—which was trying to make a U-turn—broadside. According to Anthony Bertagna, who is a corporal with the Santa Ana Police Department, both of the vehicles involved in the crash caught on fire.
Respondents arrived on scene to provide help. The person who had been riding the motorcycle—identified as a man—died at the accident scene. Reports say that prior to the arrival of authorities, civilians had pulled the wrecked motorcycle off of the victim. The name, age, and city of residence of the man have not yet been reported.
Police said that a woman who had been traveling in the car was trapped inside it as it was burning. Officers from Orange County Fire Authority worked to extract her from the burning vehicle. Bertagna said the woman suffered injuries that were major. She was in critical condition. She was taken to a hospital where she died later from the injuries she suffered. Her name, age, and city of residence have not yet been reported.
Prior to the arrival of authorities, reports say that bystanders tried to douse the flames by using water hoses. According to reports, one of the civilians who tried to douse the fire was the woman’s son.
Investigators are examining the details, information, and evidence to determine what caused the crash. They are looking into the speed of the motorcycle at the time of the crash, and if the car was attempting to make an illegal U-turn when the collision occurred.
