Crash in Santa Ana Kills One Person, Injures Two as Suspects Flee Deputies
SANTA ANA, CA (September 13, 2018) – A crash in Santa Ana killed one person and injured two others as suspects fled deputies on Tuesday. The September 11 accident occurred at roughly 11:00 p.m.
Reports say deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department attempted to pull over an SUV in the area of Tustin after they saw a suspect dash into the vehicle. The deputy saw a man running from a 7-Eleven store, and the man was wearing gloves, according to Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. The man ran into a car that was blacked-out, and raced off.
Bertagna said the deputy thought a crime might have happened. The deputy followed the SUV, but it was going 100 miles per hour or more.
The SUV eluded the deputy who first saw it. Tustin police found the vehicle later after it crashed. The driver of the SUV, identified as Ge’onte Ray Charles Sessions, a 20-year-old resident of Los Angeles, might have lost control at a point where the road dips in Santa Ana on Chestnut Avenue at Lyon Street.
Bertagna said the vehicle spun and traveled sideways into traffic moving in the opposite direction. Then the vehicle struck a tree. The crash’s impact killed the person sitting in the front passenger seat. Santa Ana police identified the victim as Luis Arreguin, a 19-year-old resident of Los Angeles. Responders had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate him from the wreck.
Responders took the driver, and a passenger who had been seated in the rear of the vehicle—identified as Travon McNeil, a 21-year-old resident of Los Angeles—to Orange County Global Medical Center. The condition of both of the victims was described as critical.
Officers found items in the SUV, such as shoes and women’s purses. At the location where the deputy first saw a suspect running into the SUV, officers found that a burglary had occurred at a store called the Red Poppy Boutique in Tustin.
Investigators from the sheriff’s department and Santa Ana police are looking into the details of the burglary, chase, and collision.
