Crash Involving Suspected DUI Driver Kills Four People in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA, CA (February 18, 2019) – Four people were killed in an collision involving a suspected DUI driver on Sunday morning in Santa Ana. The February 17 accident occurred where Tustin Avenue and Fourth Street intersect.

The time was roughly 3:00 a.m.

Reports say that Jeep—driven by Vincent Michael Calvo—allegedly traveled at a fast speed through a light that was red at the Tustin Avenue-Fourth Street intersection. The Jeep collided with another vehicle—described as a Chevrolet pickup truck. The pickup and the Jeep both overturned, according to reports.

Good Samaritans, who were nearby when the incident occurred, attempted to help the victims. Respondents arrived and pronounced four people, who had been traveling in the truck, deceased at the accident scene. The identities of the victims, including their names, ages, and cities of residence have not been reported. It is not known who was driving the pickup at the time of the collision, and if there were any other passengers in the truck.

Respondents took Calvo to the hospital. The types of injuries he suffered have not been reported. Reports say Calvo—identified as 28 years old and a resident of Buena Park—attempted to leave the hospital. He had been the only occupant of the Jeep at the time of the crash.

According to Anthony Bertagna, who is a corporal with the Santa Ana Police, video from a surveillance camera located at a gas station near the accident site recorded the crash. According to Bertagna, Calvo was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Other charges Calvo could face include vehicular manslaughter.

Investigators are continuing their examination of the details and evidence regarding the incident.
