Suspect Hits Police Vehicles; Pursued in Fast Chase in Sanger
SANGER, CA (December 7, 2018) – A suspect fled police in Sanger in the afternoon on Wednesday, striking police vehicles and driving at high speeds. The December 5 incident occurred on 7th Street, Manuel Duran Jr. said. Duran is a corporal with the Sanger Police.
According to reports, police received calls about a situation and responded to 7th Street. A driver—identified as Luis Cantu—put a Chevy Tahoe in reverse and hit a police cruiser that was occupied with police, Duran said. Cantu then drove the car forward and hit a second police cruiser. He then left the scene, with police chasing him.
According to officers, Cantu was fleeing at high speed, and reached 100 miles per hour at a point in the chase. He also drove erratically as he traveled to Reedley from Sanger. Reports say officers called off the chase because the situation became dangerous.
A helicopter operated by the California Highway Patrol located the Chevy Tahoe close to Academy Avenue and Highway 180 as it traveled to return to Sanger. The Chevy Tahoe was pursuide by officers in Sanger, and it was boxed in by other vehicles at the location where 5th Street and Academy Avenue intersect.
Officers arrested Cantu, and they said he may be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, hit-and-run, and felony pursuit.
The cause of the incident has not been reported. Investigators are looking into the details and information.
