SAN YSIDRO, CA (December 23, 2020) – On Tuesday afternoon at the Port of Entry at San Ysidro, a driver crashed at high speed into a metal barricade, killing himself and injuring two. The December 22 incident occurred in a lane that was not open to traffic.
The time was roughly 2:14 p.m., according to Salvador Castro. Castro is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
A vehicle–described as a Hyundai sedan, gray in color–was traveling from Mexico toward the United States, reports say. The vehicle was going at a fast speed and smashed into a swing-arm barricade made of metal.
The driver died in the crash. He was identified as a resident of Santa Ana, 27 years old. His name has not been reported.
According to people who witnessed the incident, reports say, the Hyundai hit two people who had been vendors on the Mexican side of the border. Officers with Tijuana Police identified them as a woman 40 years old and in a wheelchair; and a man 70 years old. The names of the injured people have not been reported.
Responders in Mexico transported the patients to the hospital. The injuries they suffered were described as moderate, the Tijuana Fire Department said. Their current condition is not known.
