San Diego Wrong Way Crash on 8 Freeway Leaves Woman Dead

DUI Suspected in Early Morning Crash on I-8 Freeway Near College Avenue
SAN DIEGO, CA (April 10, 2025) — A fatal two-vehicle collision occurred early Thursday morning on the eastbound Interstate 8 Freeway, just east of College Avenue near San Diego State University, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 4:30 a.m. when a BMW driving the wrong way in the slow lane of eastbound I-8 slammed head-on into a woman driving a Mini Cooper. The impact sent the Mini Cooper down an embankment, while the BMW remained on the freeway, blocking several lanes.
The crash killed the woman and injured the BMW driver, CHP said. Officials arrested the BMW driver on suspicion of DUI.
Paramedics Quickly Responded To The Scene But The Female Victim Was Pronounced Dead
Paramedics responded to the scene, but the exact number of people injured has not been confirmed. Authorities did confirm that at least one individual died as a result of the collision.
Tow trucks were called to remove the wrecked vehicles, and the crash temporarily impacted traffic in the area. CHP investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash and whether the wrong-way driver report is connected to the fatal collision.
The investigation remains ongoing.
