Wrong-way Crash on I-805 in San Diego County Kills Three People and Closes Freeway at La Jolla Village Drive
LA JOLLA, CA (August 24, 2018) – A wrong-way collision on I-805 in San Diego County near Sorrento Valley injured one person and killed three others. The Thursday afternoon crash occurred at roughly 4:35 p.m., close to Miramar Road and La Jolla Village Drive.
California Highway Patrol said all lanes of northbound traffic had to be closed. According to Officer Jake Sanchez with California Highway Patrol, the collision killed three people. One person who was injured had suffered serious injuries, but the victim’s prognosis looks like survival is likely.
Mary Bailey, an officer with CHP, said close to 12 vehicles were involved in the crash, and that a some had caught on fire.
According to reports, officers heard from a witness that a person who had been speeding in the wrong direction in a carpool lane caused the accident. It looked like the speeding vehicle was traveling faster than 100 miles per hour at the time it struck another vehicle head on.
Other witnesses reported that a person who had been riding a motorcycle seemed to be involved. Witnesses reported several vehicles in flames.
Police and medical responders arrived on scene. No details are yet available as to the identities of the people involved in the crash, or the injuries they may have suffered.
