Two Separate Crashes Involve Border Patrol in San Diego County; Two Killed, Six Others Injured

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA (February 20, 2019) – Two separate crashes involved the U.S. Border Patrol in San Diego County on Tuesday, which killed two people and injured six others. The February 19 incidents occurred close to the U.S.-Mexican border.

The crashes occurred after Border Patrol agents pursued vehicles in which people were traveling who were suspected of immigration violations.

In one of the incidents, reports say that three people—identified as a driver, a man who is reported to have illegally crossed the border, and a woman—were traveling in a vehicle which smashed into a big rig. The accident occurred close to the Port of Entry at Otay Mesa. Two people were killed—the man and the driver. A woman was seriously injured and her condition was described as critical.

According to reports, the situation unfolded when two people—identified as a woman and man—were witnessed to have crossed the border illegally. The pair were on foot, close to Otay Mesa. The time was roughly 5:00 p.m. The pair then entered a vehicle—described as a Volvo, white in color—and when agents attempted to stop the vehicle to pull it over, the vehicle continued away.

Reports say that agents pursued the vehicle less than a mile before the vehicle struck a semi. The accident occurred where Sanyo Avenue and Otay Mesa Road intersect. The vehicle ended up underneath the truck. Two people—the driver and another man—died at the accident scene. Respondents transported a victim—identified as a woman in her 20s—to a hospital. Her injuries were described as life-threatening. The identities of the men have not been reported. According to reports, police think the car used in the getaway had been stolen in San Diego County.

In another incident, a minivan—carrying five people—went out of control before it crashed. A bit after 5:00 p.m., in an area described as rural desert close to the community known as Boulevard, agents attempted to stop a vehicle close to Old Highway 80 and McCain Valley Road. California Highway Patrol said the reason was possible violations related to immigration.

The vehicle—described as a Mazda MPV, blue in color—would not pull over, and agents pursued it. The vehicle was reported to be traveling at high speeds, heading south on Shasta Way. In an area near Highway 94, the vehicle went out of control. The vehicle hit a fence and a pole, and then rolled over. Respondents transported the driver—identified as a woman 23 years old and a resident of San Diego—to Sharp Memorial Hospital. She was reported to have suffered injuries that were described as minor.

According to the California Highway Patrol, four people—described as men who told agents they were from Mexico—had been in the backseat, lying down and not using seat-belts. Respondents took two of the victims—identified as 25 years old and 27 years old—to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Their injuries were not described. The two other men—identified as 24 years old and 39 years old—did not want medical attention.

Investigators are examining the details, information, and evidence in both incidents. No other details are available at this time.
