Wrong-way Driver Dies in Collision on I-5 Near Downtown San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA (January 14, 2019) – A person who was driving the wrong way on I-5 near San Diego’s downtown died in a collision in the afternoon on Sunday. The January 13 accident occurred on the southbound side of the freeway, a bit before where state Route 163 is located.

The time was roughly 4:06 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Reports say that a vehicle—described as a Nissan Versa, black in color—had been heading north in the lanes that travel south. The Nissan collided with a vehicle—described as a minivan, white in color.

Authorities said that the person who had been driving the wrong way was killed at the accident scene. The person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence have not yet been reported.

According to Rick Ballard, who is a battalion chief with San Diego Fire-Rescue, the person who had been driving the van was trapped in the vehicle. Responders rescued the victim, who was identified only as male, and took him to a hospital. Reports say he had pain in his chest, and may have suffered an injury to his leg. The man’s name, age, and city of residence have not yet been reported. It has not yet been reported what his current condition is.

Reports say that one of the vehicles involved in the collision may have exploded after the crash’s impact, but it has not been reported which vehicle it may have been. It has not yet been reported what led to the crash, or caused it. Investigators are looking into the information to find out why the accident happened. No other details are available at this time.
