Sixteen-year-old Driver Suspected of Stealing Jeep in San Diego is Run over

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 21, 2020) – On Monday night in San Diego, a jeep that was suspected stolen by a teen driver ran over him. The October 19 crash occurred on 54th Street.

The time was roughly after 7:20 p.m., John Buttle said. Buttle is an officer with San Diego Police.

A vehicle–described as a Jeep Compass–was reported stolen to police. The Jeep was alleged to have been taken from Fairmont Avenue in the 3800 block. Reports say authorities saw the Jeep going at a fast speed, and tried to stop and pull the driver over in the vicinity of University Avenue and 54th Street.

The person driving the suspected stolen vehicle fled, going south on 54th Street. According to reports, Buttle is reported to have said the police pursuit was abandoned as the Jeep’s driver went through lights that were red.

In the area of Chollas Creek, the Jeep’s driver is reported to have gone into the lanes of opposing traffic on 54th Street, going south in the lanes that head north. The driver crashed, hitting a traffic signal, reports say.

The teen driver was thrown from the Jeep, or he attempted to exit the moving vehicle, and the Jeep ran over him. The boy’s arm was pinned beneath a tire when responders arrived.

Rescuers worked to extricate the boy, and responders transported him to a hospital. He suffered injuries that included a broken hip. He was identified only as 16 years old.

Responders also transported two passengers who had been traveling in the Jeep. They were identified only as girls who are also 16 years old. It is not known if they were hurt in the crash.

The owner of the Jeep has not been identified in reports. Investigators are continuing their work on the incident details.
