Police Vehicle Crashes into Store in San Diego’s Barrio Logan Area; Three Injured

SAN DIEGO, CA (June 27, 2019) – A police vehicle crashed into a store in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood in the morning on Wednesday, in an incident in which three people were injured. The June 26 incident occurred at Ponderosa Deli Market, located on National Avenue.

The time was roughly a little after 9:00 a.m.

Reports say San Diego Police believe that a vehicle, which was described as a Lyft car, had been heading west on National Avenue and went through a light that was red. A vehicle—described as a San Diego Community College District police SUV—which had been traveling southbound on Cesar Chavez Parkway, attempted to avoid a collision with the Lyft vehicle. The police SUV swerved, and went into the store.

The Lyft vehicle was described by police as a Nissan Altima. The driver was identified as a Hispanic man, 27 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.

A person who had been walking in front of the market suffered a broken leg. Responders took him to a hospital. His current condition is not known. His name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.

Responders transported the police officer to a hospital. She suffered injuries that were described as minor, including an injured head, and cuts to her face. Her name has not been reported.

A person who had been a passenger traveling in the Lyft vehicle was also taken to a hospital. The types of injuries she suffered, and her current condition, are not known. Her name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.

It is not known from reports if the Lyft driver suffered injuries. Inspectors arrived to examine the building for structural safety.

Investigators are continuing their work to understand the circumstances of the crash.
