Hit-and-run Driver Kills Bicyclist on University Avenue in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (May 27, 2020) – On Tuesday night, a hit-and-run driver struck and killed a bicyclist in the Rolando area of San Diego. The May 26 incident occurred on University Avenue in the 6600 block.
The time was a little after 7:00 p.m., according to Kevin Gibson. Gibson is a police sergeant.
Reports say a vehicle–described as a Toyota Prius– had been traveling westbound on University Avenue. A bicyclist, who had been traveling on the sidewalk and going in the same direction, made a large turn to the left in front of the vehicle, close to where Alamo Drive intersects.
The vehicle struck the bicyclist, and the impact threw the rider to the ground. According to reports, the person who had been driving the vehicle stopped, exited the car, and picked the rider up. The driver placed the rider on road, reports say, and then re-entered the vehicle.
According to reports, the person was seen driving away on University Avenue.
Responders arrived and transported the injured rider to Scripps Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced deceased in the hospital.
The rider was identified only as between 45 to 50 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Not long after the crash, officers located the vehicle involved in the incident on El Cajon Boulevard in the 6800 block. The car was not occupied.
Investigators are searching for the suspect hit-and-run driver. They are collecting details and information.
