Man Killed, Child Seriously Injured in Crash in San Bernardino Involving Suspected Hit-and-run DUI Driver
SAN BERNARDINO, CA (November 11, 2019) – A man was killed and a child was seriously injured in San Bernardino early in the morning on Saturday when a suspected hit-and-run DUI driver smashed into their vehicle. The November 9 incident occurred where Mount Vernon Avenue and Fifth Street intersect.
The time was roughly 3:50 a.m., the San Bernardino Police Department said.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a Honda Civic—had been eastbound on Fifth Street when it was struck by another vehicle—described as a Toyota Tacoma. According to reports, the Toyota had been southbound on Mount Vernon Avenue, and failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Fifth Street.
Two people had been occupants of the Honda. Responders arrived and pronounced the driver of the Honda—identified as a man—deceased at the incident site. He was a resident of San Bernardino, 56 years old, the San Bernardino County coroner’s office and police said. Hi name has not yet been reported.
A child who had been traveling in the Honda was seriously injured. Responders transported the child to a hospital. The child’s condition was described as critical. The child was identified as 5 or 6 years old.
The person who had been driving the Toyota ran from the incident site. Officers arrested the driver some time later, according to Jeff Harvey. Harvey is a sergeant with the San Bernardino Police.
The driver was identified as Jeffrey Michael Lukes, a resident of Rialto, 37 years old. He was arrested on suspicion of murder, according to reports. DUI is suspected in the incident, according to reports.
