Man Dies in Crash in San Bernardino; Other Driver Suspected of DUI

SAN BERNARDINO, CA (March 5, 2019) – A collision early in the morning on Sunday in San Bernardino killed Gila Lopez, and police suspect the other driver involved was under the influence of alcohol. The March 3 accident occurred on East Highland Avenue.

The time was roughly 1:00 a.m.

Reports say a man who was driving a sedan—described as a Chrysler 300, gray in color—had been speeding on East Highland Avenue. At a point close to Windsor Drive, the Chrysler smashed into the rear end of a Kia Soul. The Kia Soul had been traveling the same direction, the San Bernardino Police Department said.

The impact from the crash caused the two vehicles to spin out. Both vehicles had major damage, reports say.

Respondents arrived and transported Lopez, who had been driving the Kia, to St. Bernardine Medical Center. Lopez died in the hospital. Lopez was 60 years old and a resident of San Bernardino.

Respondents took the driver of the Chrysler to Arrowhead Medical Center. He was later identified as 32 years old and a resident of San Bernardino. His name has not been reported. It is not known from reports what injuries he suffered. Police suspect the driver of the Chrysler may have been under the influence of alcohol when the collision occurred.

Investigators are examining the details and information regarding the collision. Police ask that if anyone has information regarding the crash, he or she should call Sergeant Harvey or Detective Peck. The number is 909-384-5791.
