San Bernardino Crash Sparks Fire at Storage Facility and Residence, Injuring Six
SAN BERNARDINO, CA (December 10, 2020) – On Wednesday morning in San Bernardino, a vehicle crashed, sparking a fire which burned a storage facility and residence. The December 9 incident injured six people.
The time was roughly 9:30 a.m., Mike McClintock said. McClintock is a battalion chief with San Bernardino County Fire.
The vehicle–described as an SUV–crashed at Baseline Street and Garden Drive, reports say. It came to a stop at a U-Haul dealership, landing on top of a safety post in front of a big tank of propane.
According to reports, the impact from the crash broke the propane tank from the foundation it had been sitting on. Propane traveled toward buildings that were 30 yards from the crash site.
John Echevarria, who is a sergeant with San Bernardino Police, said the propane was ignited, for reasons that are not known.
Two buildings caught fire. One was described as a storage unit.
An apartment on Garden Street in the 1200 block burned.
Responders transported six people to the hospital. Four of the patients had burn injuries. Two patients suffered injury described as trauma. The current condition of the people has not been reported.
None of the people who were hurt have been identified. The driver involved in the crash has not been identified.
Investigators are working to understand what led to the crash, and how the chain of events that followed transpired.
