San Jose has the safest roads in the nation. There is an $80 million plan in place to make them even safer.
“Vision Zero” is being unveiled Monday. It is designed to reduce fatalities and injuries due to car accidents.
The plan has been tried in Sweden and Europe and has reduced deaths by 53% since 1997.
The plan has the ambitious goal of reducing solo drivers from 80% to 40% by 2040.
New York, Seattle, and San Francisco have similar plans.
San Jose’s injury accident ratio is 3.18% per 1000. this is about 1/2 the national average.
The fatality rate is 3.72% per 100,000.
According to a recent report, these accidents occur more because of poor choices.
Aly Snow, 20, was one resident who lost her life.
Some plans are to :
lower speed limits
replace speed limits
replace amber lights with LED lights on 14 streets
give pedestrians more time to cross
install bike lanes
add traffic lights
install radar signs
put some streets on a road diet
