Silverado Canyon, CA – (December 18, 2022) Robert Joseph Nicoletti was killed after losing control of a Ferrari on a dangerous California road — in a crash that left the sports car split in half.

Public Information Officer of the California Highway Patrol, Anselmo Templado, said in a statement that Nicoletti was traveling south at a high rate of speed about 3:40 p.m. on Friday afternoon when he was unable to navigate a turn on Santiago Canyon Road.
He struck a blue Toyota Venza driven by Pauline Bui and a silver Mazda SUV driven by Daniel Ryan in the Santa Ana Mountain community of Silverado.
Bui was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center with minor injuries and a passenger in that car was taken to Mission Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Ryan was also taken to Mission Hospital for minor injuries.
Nicoletti, 71-year-old retired dental salesman, was thrown from the Ferrari and pronounced dead at the scene. The other motorists in the two cars suffered minor injuries.
Santiago Canyon was closed in both directions for about 5 hours.
Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the fatal crash, which left debris scattered along the highway and hillside.
Aerial footage of the scene, showed the red Ferrari was shattered in pieces by the impact, with the rear of the vehicle effectively sawed off from the passenger seats.
New electronic signage that showed the speed of passing cars had been installed on the 55 mph road earlier this year following a string of deadly accidents, according to The Orange County Register.
The 11-mile stretch had seen six fatal motorcycle accidents in a seven-week period in the summer of 2016, according to the paper.
8 Essential Safety Tips You Should Know Before Getting Behind The Wheel of a Ferrari.
Following these defensive driving tips can help reduce your risk behind the wheel of a Ferrari:
- Think safety first. Avoiding aggressive and inattentive driving tendencies. Always lock your doors and wear your seatbelt to protect you from being thrown from the car in a crash.
- Be aware of your surroundings — Stay Focused. Check your mirrors frequently and scan conditions 20 to 30 seconds ahead of you. Keep your eyes moving. Also, keep an eye on pedestrians, bicyclists, and pets along the road.
- Do not depend on other drivers. Do not assume another driver is going to move out of the way or allow you to merge. Plan your movements anticipating the worst-case scenario.
- Follow the 3- to 4-second rule. Use the 3- to 4-second rule to help you establish and maintain a safe following distance and provide adequate time for you to brake to a stop if necessary.
- Keep your speed down. It’s your responsibility to ensure that your speed matches conditions. It is easy to get a Ferrari going fast. Higher speeds make controlling your vehicle that much more difficult if things go wrong. To maintain control of your vehicle, you must control your speed.
- Have an escape route. In all driving situations, the best way to avoid potential dangers is to position your vehicle where you have the best chance of seeing and being seen. Having an alternate path of travel also is essential, so always leave yourself an out — a place to move your vehicle if your immediate path of travel is suddenly blocked.
- Separate risks. Your goal is to avoid having to deal with too many risks at the same time. When faced with multiple risks, it’s best to manage them one at a time.
- Cut out distractions. Driving deserves your full attention — so stay focused on the driving task. A distraction is any activity that diverts your attention from the task of driving.
