Riverside Police Cruiser Injures and Kills an Elderly Woman on Mother’s Day

Riverside, CA – An elderly woman pedestrian died in the hospital on Mother’s Day after a police cruiser struck her while she crossed the road to go to church.

The woman was crossing Madison Street to reach her final destination – St. Anthony’s Church –when a police cruiser struck her in Casa Blanca at about 7:30 a.m. A witness, according to the Press Enterprise, walked outside of his convenience store after he heard a loud noise to inspect what was happening.
A police officer was sitting on the hood of his marked police car with his face buried in his hands and was shaking. Another police officer was on the phone contacting emergency services which responded immediately to the scene.
There was a sandal underneath one of the wheels of the police cruiser; it belonged to the woman lying on the pavement about 20-feet outside of the crosswalk. She was allegedly unresponsive and thought of as dead by witnesses. An ambulance transported the woman to Riverside Community hospital at about 7:50 a.m. she had serious injuries.
Most people had recognized the woman as a friendly person who would wave at strangers. Many had seed the woman but did not know her by name. She had been actively walking the neighborhood for about five years with a small dog trailing her heels.
Her son was received a call late afternoon on Mother’s Day from the hospital. They told him that his mother had died at about 3:00 p.m.
