Crashes on Ortega Highway Kills Two Motorcyclists Attempting to Pass Other Vehicles
ORTEGA HIGHWAY, CA (April 11, 2019) – Two motorcyclists died in two separate crashes in the afternoon on Sunday on the Ortega Highway, also known as Highway 74. The April 7 accidents occurred on each side of the two-lane highway, as each motorcyclist attempted to pass another vehicle.
The first incident occurred at roughly 3:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said. A rider, traveling on the highway in an area close to the Orange County/Riverside border, tried to pass a vehicle described as a Dodge Durango. The rider traveled to the vehicle’s right side, gained speed, and lost control of the bike.
The rider veered onto a paved turn-out beside the road. The rider and the bike fell, and struck a boulder in the embankment. The impact threw the rider from the bike. The rider, who had been wearing a helmet, died at the accident site. He was identified as Lam Nguyen, 21 years old and a resident of Orange.
In the second crash, which occurred at roughly 4:15 p.m., a rider who was traveling eastbound on the highway attempted to pass a vehicle. After crossing into the opposing lane of traffic, the rider collided head on with a vehicle described as a Toyota Camry.
The impact from the collision threw the rider from the motorcycle. He died at the site of the accident, located near Lake Elsinore and to the west of Grand Avenue. The rider was identified as Zachary Johnson, 27 years old and a resident of Hemet.
No details have been reported on the occupants of the vehicles involved in the two crashes, and whether anyone in those vehicles was injured in the incidents. The identities of the drivers of the vehicles is not known, nor whether any passengers had been traveling with them.
