Boy Identified as Teen Victim Killed in Collision on 91 Freeway

RIVERSIDE, CA (May 9, 2019) – Juan Anaya was identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office as the victim who was killed Thursday night in a collision on the 91 Freeway. The May 2 incident occurred near Green River Road and to the west of it.

The time was roughly 10:25 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Reports say a person—identified as a man 18 years old—had been driving a vehicle described as a Dodge Journey. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on the 91 Freeway, and smashed into a rear wheel of a tractor-trailer that had been parked on the freeway’s shoulder on the right.

According to reports, the truck had mechanical problems, and was stopped with emergency lights lit and hazard warning triangles placed outside. According to Erick Helvie, who is a sergeant with the California Highway Patrol in the Riverside office, the truck’s driver reported to authorities that a vehicle had hit his semi.

Juan Anaya had been traveling as a passenger in the vehicle that struck the big rig. He died at the accident site. Anaya was 17 years old.

Respondents transported the driver of the Dodge to a hospital in the area. The California Highway Patrol said the man suffered injuries to his knee, eye, and chest. The identity of the driver, including his name and city of residence, has not been reported. His current condition is not known.
