Residents Apprehensive About Transportation of Crude Oil

Residents of Contra Costa county, including Rodeo, Crockett, and Martinez are apprehensive about the transportation of crude oil through their communities by rail and want assurances that they will be safe.

Accidents have occurred with the rail transportation of oil including an accident in Quebec that killed 47 people and another in West Virginia that caused the evacuation o0f hundreds of people.

Plans by ConocoPhillips are to move oil by five cars per week, carrying 80 train cars each between Santa Maria along the Amtrak Corridor.

Community residents at a meeting Thursday discussed emergency procedures which should be provided for and taken. Insurance provisions were also questioned.

Bakken crude oil is more combustible and lighter than ethanol. Many community residents came away terrified.

Railroad companies as yet have not released reports off their emergency plans to the community.

A number of regulatory agencies are involved in the planning.

A report put together by Governor Jerry Brown last year reported an increase in rail incidents.

Californians are said to use 40 million gallons of gas per day. There is some new technology in rail transportation.

Bernard Weinstein, Associate Director of Maquire energy Institute at Southern Methodist University said communities are against moving oil by rail and pipelines but still want to fill up their tanks.
