Recalls have been a serious issue in recent months. It may be helpful to know how to recognize a recall or a technical service bulletin.
Toyota has recalled over 8 million cars in the U.S. since last fall. Honda stated that over 410,000 Odyssey minivans and Element small trucks will be recalled for brake problems. These issues could make it difficult for the car to stop.
Honda said that the brakes must be depressed closer and closer to the floor in order for the car to stop.
Three accidents have occurred as a result of this issue.
In order to research the occurrence of a recall, consumers are advised to “…copy the vehicle’s make, model, and year together with the VIN.” Pull up http://safecar.gov and follow the prompts to ” Safety Recalls” and elicit the information the consumer is requesting.
AAA in Southern California lists this information on its website on the vehicle recall page.
Recall information is available on all types of vehicles.
Car makers pay for the recalls. Some publish their own recall information after notifying NHTSA.
Consumers who have identified that their car may have a recall issue should have their car repaired by the dealer as soon as possible. They should communicate with the dealer regarding any changes in their location.
Recommended repairs to cars, should the car display this issue, are called technical service bulletins. Consumers should contact the dealer regarding these problems.
A “service campaign” may cover an issue listed by the manufacturer. Honda owners whose cars have been identified in a recall are advised to take their cars to the dealer.
An investigation is ongoing as to why a 2008 Toyota Prius sped up unexpectedly on Interstate 8 in a related issue. There is a discrepancy as to whether the driver or the car was at fault in the incident.
Consumers can contact the NHTSA for more information on recalls.
