Three People Injured in Hit-and-run Crash on 10 Freeway in Pomona; One Person Killed
POMONA, CA (January 25, 2021) – Early in a the morning on Sunday, a three-vehicle crash involving a hit-and-run driver killed one person and injured three others, including Velma Soto, Luis Miranda, and Christaphore Ruffin. The January 24 incident occurred on the 10 Freeway westbound.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the first collision occurred shortly after midnight. A vehicle–described as a Chevrolet Malibu–struck the back end of a Honda Accord that was stopped and disabled in the freeway’s lane number four.
The force of the collision shoved the Honda toward three people who had exited the vehicle. The three people were struck.
One of the victims died at the crash site. He was identified only as a resident of South Gate, 41 years old. His name has not been reported.
Velma Soto and Luis Miranda suffered injuries that were described as major. Soto is 39 years old. Miranda is 20 years old. Both are South Gate residents.
Responders transported Soto and Miranda to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Their current condition is not known.
Following the first collision, the Honda overturned and landed on its side close to the offramp for Kellogg Drive. The Chevrolet Malibu was disabled and stopped in the freeway’s number two lane.
Shortly after the first crash, a vehicle–described as a Chevrolet Cruze–which was traveling west on the roadway, struck the Malibu. The person who had been driving the Cruze suffered injuries that were described as minor.
He was identified as Christaphore Ruffin, a resident of Barstow, 32 years old. Responders transported Ruffin to the same hospital as Soto and Miranda.
The person who had been driving the Malibu fled the crash site. Investigators are searching for the suspect, who has not been described.
