Man Killed in Pomona Crash Involving Suspect Fleeing Police
POMONA, CA (February 5, 2021) – Roland Pinto was killed Wednesday afternoon in Pomona when a driver–in a suspected stolen vehicle and fleeing police–struck his vehicle. The February 4 incident occurred where Philadelphia Street and San Antonio Avenue intersect.
The time was roughly a little after 3:51 p.m., according to Pomona Police.
The incident began when officers tried to make a driver stop for a code violation, reports say. The driver would not stop, and drove off. Officers pursued.
According to reports the suspect driver collided with a vehicle at the San Antonio Avenue and Philadelphia Street intersection.
Responders arrived to help. The person who was driving the vehicle that was struck was pronounced deceased at the crash site.
The victim was identified by family as Rolando Pinto, a resident of Pomona, 26 years old.
The suspect driver ran from the scene, but authorities found him and he was arrested. He was identified as Eli Richard Lopez, 22 years old. The charges Lopez faces include grand theft auto, hit-and-run resulting in death or injury, evading a peace officer, and murder.
The vehicle Lopez was driving was suspected to have been stolen. The owner of the vehicle has not been identified.
