Man Carjacks Vehicle with 4 Children Inside in Pico Rivera; Girl Killed, Boy Injured
PICO RIVERA, CA (July 6, 2020) – On Sunday afternoon in Pico Rivera, a girl was killed and her brother was injured when a suspect carjacked the vehicle they were waiting in. The July 5 incident occurred on Whittier Boulevard in the 9200 block.
Reports say four children were waiting inside their parked van while their parents went to buy food, according to Barry Hall. Hall is a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s lieutenant. A man jumped into the front seat of the van, which was running.
The suspect–who was identified later as Jose Aguilar, 26 or 27 years old and a resident of Los Angeles–demanded that the children get out of the van. One of the children, who was identified as 18 years old, fought with Aguilar, and then she went out of the vehicle.
It is not clear if the girl was pushed or jumped from the van. It is alleged that Aguilar was driving at a fast speed and the doors flew open.
The 18-year-old girl’s brother–identified as 11 years old–also came out of the van. The two victims suffered injuries that were described as minor.
Two children were still inside the fast-moving van. In the area where Lindsey Avenue and Whittier Boulevard intersect, a boy–identified as 8 years old–came out of the van. According to Hall, the injuries the boy suffered were described as major.
Not long after, a girl–identified as 13 years old–went out of the vehicle. The girl was pronounced deceased at the incident site.
According to Hall, it is not known if the victims had jumped out or were forced out of the fast-moving van.
At the intersection of Rosemead Avenue and Whittier, the van collided with a vehicle. The other vehicle has not been described.
The other vehicle may have continued to travel another three miles on Rosemead after the crash. The occupant or occupants of that vehicle have not been identified, and it is not known if anyone inside was hurt.
In El Monte, the van stopped working, and Aguilar jumped out. It is alleged he attempted to steal a second vehicle–described as a Nissan. A person who was buying fruit at a stand saw the suspect try to steal his car.
According to Hall, the man who was shopping re-entered his vehicle and fought with the suspect. Witnesses helped the man pull Aguilar out of his car.
Reports say the car owner and bystanders detained Aguilar until deputies arrived. Responders transported Aguilar to a hospital in the area. It is not known what charges he faces.
The parents of the children hurt in the incident have not been identified in reports. Investigators are continuing their work of gathering details and information regarding the series of incidents.
