Gabriel Edwardo Torres Dies When Big Rig Falls Over on Runaway Ramp of I-15 Freeway in Cajon Pass
PHELAN, CA (November 12, 2018) – A big rig fell over on a ramp of the I-15 Freeway early in the morning on Thursday in Cajon Pass, killing the driver. The November 8 accident occurred on a gravel ramp next to the interstate designed for runaway trucks that may have problems with their brakes on steep stretches of road.
The accident site was close to Highway 138, and to the north of it, in an area of Phelan that is unincorporated. The time was roughly 11:17 a.m.
According to reports, responders from the San Bernardino County Fire Department found the big rig truck, which had been pulling two trailers loaded with gravel, had overturned on the gravel ramp. They discovered that the driver—identified as Gabriel Edwardo Torres, a 40-year-old resident of Hesperia—was in the truck.
According to officials with the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, Torres was pronounced deceased at the accident scene.
Officials with the California Highway Patrol think that Torres exited the 15 Freeway as he was heading southbound, and drove on the gravel runaway truck ramp. At that point, it is believed that the truck when out of Torres’ control. The truck fell, landing on its side. According to Brian Alvarez, an officer with CHP, the accident injured Torres, trapping him inside, and ended up killing him.
Alvarez said it is not yet known why Torres drove onto the gravel runaway truck ramp beside the freeway.
Investigators do not think drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. They are looking into whether there was a mechanical problem with the vehicle.
