Los Angeles Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Suspected Street Racer
LOS ANGELES, CA (July 20, 2021) – On Sunday morning in South Los Angeles, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver who is suspected of street racing. The July 18 crash occurred in the neighborhood of Vermont Vista, on Figueroa Street and 89th Street.
The time was roughly 8:25 a.m., Los Angeles Police said.
A vehicle–described as a Kia k5, dark gray in color–was heading south on Figueroa Street, and the driver is alleged to have been racing with two other vehicles. The two other vehicles have not been described.
The Kia struck a pedestrian, who had been walking in a crosswalk that was not marked. The driver fled the crash site without helping the victim. The two other drivers who are alleged to have been street racing also fled the crash site.
Responders arrived and transported the victim to Harbor UCLA Medical Center. He died in the hospital.
The victim was identified only as 59 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Investigators are asking the public for help in locating the suspect driver. If anyone has information about the incident, the person can call Detective Keith Gonzales or Officer Carol Mitchell. They are with the South Traffic Division, and can be reached at 323-421-2500.
