One Man Killed, Another Injured in Big Rig Crash on SR-76 in Pauma Valley
PAUMA VALLEY, CA (March 15, 2019) – One man was killed and another was injured in a crash involving a tractor-trailer Thursday morning on SR-76 in Pauma Valley. The March 14 accident occurred in a rural area near Palomar Mountain State Park, and a few miles to the southwest of it.
The time was a little after 8:00 a.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck’s driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling westbound. At a point close to Rincon Ranch Road, the big rig—which had been carrying bags of mulch—overturned, and went into a ditch beside the road.
The truck’s driver, and a passenger who had been traveling with him, were trapped in the overturned wreck. Respondents worked to extricate the victims. The man who had been driving the truck—identified as 54 years old and a resident of Indio—died at the accident scene. Reports do not yet include his name.
Respondents extricated the passenger—identified as a man 55 years old and a resident of Indio—and transported him by airlift to Escondido’s Palomar Medical Center. Kevin Smale, who is a public-affairs officer with the California Highway Patrol, said the man suffered injuries that were described as minor. The man’s name has not been reported.
Investigators are looking into the details and information to understand the events that led to the accident.
