Tire Loose from Trailer Rolls Across Highway 101 in Paso Robles; Kills Man in Car

PASO ROBLES, CA (October 30, 2020) – Late in the afternoon on Thursday in Paso Robles, a passenger in a car on Highway 101 was struck and killed by a rolling tire. The tire had come off of a fifth-wheel trailer in the October 29 incident, which occurred close to where Spring Street is located.
The time was roughly 2:40 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
A vehicle–described as a Ford F150–had been towing a Crossroads trailer, and a tire came off the axle in the rear of the trailer. The tire bounded over the lanes on the southbound side of the roadway.
The bouncing tire traveled over the median, and came down on top of a vehicle–described as a Jeep Cherokee–which had been been traveling in the northbound lanes.
The force of the tire smashing onto the roof of the Jeep fatally injured a passenger, who suffered major trauma, reports say. The victim died a short while after the incident. His identity–including name, age, and city of residence–has not been reported.
The person who had been driving the Jeep–identified only as a woman who is a resident of San Miguel, 81 years old–was not hurt, according to reports.
The person who had been driving the towing rig did not know what had occurred, reports say. A motorist who had witnessed the incident caught his attention to have him stop.
The driver of the rig was identified only as a resident of Florida. His name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.
Other crashes were reported to have occurred in the area, but no details have been reported. Investigators are working on the details and information related to the crash.
