Hit-and-run Driver Tased by Police After Crash in Paso Robles

PASO ROBLES, CA (February 5, 2020) –  A suspected hit-and-run driver was tased by police in Paso Robles in the morning on Tuesday. The February 4 incident occurred on Paso Robles Street close to the off-ramp for the 101 Freeway north.

The time was roughly a little after 11:00 a.m.

Reports say a driver struck a vehicle that was parked and fled the scene on foot. According to reports, the driver was shouting at passing vehicles and attempted to enter other vehicles located nearby.

According to police, when an officer approached the suspect, the suspect began to punch and kick the officer. The officer, with the assistance of other officers, tased the suspect and arrested him.

Responders transported the suspect to a hospital to have his injuries that he suffered in the collision treated. According to police, the suspect was believed to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

The suspect was identified as Darren Santangelo, 32 years old and a resident of Atascadero. He was arrested on suspicion of fleeing the scene of a traffic collision, felony assault on a police officer, and driving under the influence.

The owner of the parked vehicle that was struck has not been identified, and the vehicle has not been described.  Investigators are continuing their examination of the details and information regarding the incident.
