Car Traveling the Wrong Way on 60 Freeway Hits Police Vehicle in Ontario

ONTARIO, CA (June 13, 2019) – A car that had been heading in the wrong direction on the 60 Freeway in Ontario on Wednesday struck a police vehicle. The June 12 incident occurred in the freeway’s lanes that head east.

Reports say the incident began when officers responded to a report of a burglary in a residence. They saw a vehicle—described as a ragtop Chrysler, red in color—leave the scene of the burglary on South Holmes Avenue in the 2700 block. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over at roughly 1:20 p.m., but the person driving would not stop.

Police pursued the car until the driver is alleged to have entered the 60 Freeway in the wrong direction, traveling west on the eastbound side. According to reports, a different police vehicle was stopped and waiting on the shoulder of the freeway close to the off-ramp for Vineyard Avenue. According to officials, the driver who was fleeing in the Chrysler rammed the police vehicle on purpose.

The driver fled on foot from the Chrysler, and he was later apprehended by authorities. The driver was identified as Gino John, a resident of Rancho Cucamonga. A passenger in the Chrysler—identified as Jailene Caceres, a resident of Texas—was also taken into custody.

Responders transported both of the suspects to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries. According to police, John faces charges that include suspicion of attempted murder on a police officer and felony evading. Caceres faces charges of suspicion of resisting arrest.

Reports say the officer who was in the police vehicle that had been rammed was not injured. Investigators are continuing to examine the evidence relating to the incident.
