Three Seriously Injured After Horrific Crash Near Lerdo Jail
OILDALE, CA (May 20, 2025) — Three people were seriously injured Tuesday evening in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Manor Street and China Grade Loop, following a high-speed chase involving a driver who had just exited the nearby Lerdo Jail property, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 7 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. A speeding driver reportedly slammed into an SUV carrying two adults and five children, ranging in age from 1 to 10 years old, Bakersfield Now reported.
Suspect In The Crash Bypassed Security While Exiting The Lerdo Jail Campus At A High Speed
Investigators say the suspect had bypassed security and exited the Lerdo Jail campus for unknown reasons before fleeing at high speed. It remains unclear why the man was at the detention facility or what prompted his sudden departure.
Witnesses and officials reported the suspect was traveling eastbound on China Grade Loop at a high rate of speed when he struck the SUV at the intersection with Manor Street. The force of the impact left several people injured, including an adult and a child in the SUV, as well as the driver himself.
3 Individuals Were Rushed To The Hospital With Major Injuries
Emergency responders rushed three individuals to a nearby hospital with major injuries. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, remains hospitalized.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident at the jail, while the CHP is leading the probe into the crash.
