Officials Shut Down San Onofre Power Station after Leak

Posted on February 1, 2012 | Written By: iadminlaw

The investigation into the cause behind a water leak at the San Onofre nuclear power station continued on Wednesday.

Officials shut down the plant at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday after a leak was detected in one of the steam generator tubes. Authorities are assessing the leak to determine its cause.

A spokesperson for the company said that the shutdown was just a precaution and that the incident was so minor that “it wouldn’t even qualify as the least severe” of the types of infractions listed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

None of the workers at the plant were evacuated.

However, activists still maintain that a small amount of radiation may have escaped into the atmosphere and that the surrounding area could be at risk.
