Woman Killed in Crash Involving Hit-and-run Driver in Northridge
NORTHRIDGE, CA (October 21, 2019) – Maribel Elizabeth Garcia was killed in a crash involving a hit-and-run driver in Northridge early in the morning on Sunday. The October 20 incident occurred on Balboa Boulevard.
The time was roughly 5:20 a.m., the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Reports say two vehicles—described as a sedan and a pickup truck—collided. The impact sent the vehicles to travel off the road and land on a sidewalk where a bench for a bus stop is located. One of the metal pillars of the bus shelter pierced through a windshield of the car.
The person who had been driving the pickup truck ran away from the incident site.
Responders arrived and pronounced the person who had been the driver of the car deceased at the site of the crash. She was later identified as Garcia, 54 years old and a resident of Van Nuys, according to Larry Dietz. Dietz is a lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Investigators searched for the person who had been driving the pickup truck. They found the suspect and authorities took her into custody. She was identified as Barbara (Ann) Vergara, a resident of Van Nuys 54 years old.
Investigators are working to collect details, information, and evidence to understand what circumstances factored into the cause of the incident. At this time, no details are known regarding the sequence of events that occurred, and how the vehicles collided.
