Wrong-way Crash on Highway 101 In Nipomo Kills One Person, Injures Three
NIPOMO, CA (April 1, 2021) – Late at night on Saturday in Nipomo, a wrong-way crash killed a person and injured three others. The March 27 incident occurred on Highway 101 on the northbound side of the roadway, near West Tefft Street.
The time was roughly 11:12 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
According to authorities, a vehicle–described as a Chevrolet Tahoe–had got on the 101 Highway at the off-ramp for West Tefft Street, and was traveling the wrong way.
The Tahoe was going southbound in the lanes that head north when it collided head on with a vehicle–described as a Honda CR-V.
The force of the crash sent the Honda to rollover, and come to a stop on its roof. The Honda ended up in the median on the southbound side.
The Tahoe ended up in the median on the northbound side.
Two people in the Honda suffered injuries that were described as major. Responders transported them to Marian Regional Medical Center.
The driver of the Honda was identified as Jose Cruz, Jr. a resident of San Jose, 44 years old.
A woman who was a passenger in the Honda, who suffered major injuries, has not been identified. A third person who was traveling in the Honda was thrown from the vehicle in the crash.
Responders transported the victim who was ejected to Marion Regional Medical Center. He died in the hospital. His identity has not been reported.
The person who had been driving the Tahoe fled the scene on foot. Officers located the person and arrested him on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, and felony DUI.
He was identified as Ernesto Herrera, a resident of Santa Maria, 24 years old. Herrera was reported to have suffered injuries that were described as minor.
