Woman Killed in Head-on Crash in Newport Beach Identified by Family

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (June 6, 2019) – A woman who was killed in a head-on collision in the morning on Wednesday in Newport Beach was identified by a family member as Arda Melikian. The June 5 incident occurred on State Route 73 close to Campus Drive.

The time was a little before 9:00 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

Reports say the California Highway Patrol is investigating the possibility the incident may have been intentional. A vehicle—described as a Mercedes-Benz, silver in color—had been heading south in the freeway’s northbound lanes. The Mercedes smashed another vehicle—described as a BMW, white in color—head on.

The Mercedes was moving through surface streets in an erratic manner prior to entering the freeway from the on-ramp at Birch Street, according to John DeMatteo. DeMatteo is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

According to reports, the person who had been driving the Mercedes—identified as Luke Fitch, 23 years old and a resident of Newport Beach—was traveling at speeds of at least 100 miles per hour before hitting the BMW.

The driver of the BMW was killed in the crash. Reports say the California Highway Patrol identified the driver as Arda Gulessarian, 65 years old. However, a nephew identified the victim as Arda Melikyan, 64 years old.

Sergeant Todd Kovaletz was reported to have said that, based on the driving that occurred before the incident, they are looking at whether the act was intentional.

Respondents transported Fitch to a hospital in the area for injuries that have not been described. His current condition is not known.

Another vehicle, described as a Lexus, was involved in the incident, but DeMatteo said neither of the two occupants—a passenger and a driver—were injured.

Investigators are continuing their work to gather information and evidence to understand the circumstances of the incident. No other information is currently known.
