High-speed Crash on Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach Kills Driver; Injures Passenger
NEWPORT BEACH, CA (March 3, 2020) – Early in the morning on Tuesday, a driver was killed and a passenger seriously injured in a crash at high speed in Newport Beach. The March 3 incident occurred on the Balboa Peninsula.
The time was a little after 1:00 a.m., according to Florentino Olivera. Olivera is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say the events began not long after a male and a female left a bar in the area after a type of argument, which has not been described. The two people entered a vehicle, described as a Mercedes-AMG.
According to Olivera, the driver traveled at a fast speed and, for a brief time, was pursued by Newport Beach police on Balboa Boulevard. Reports say the Mercedes went out of the officers’ sight as it traveled at speeds of roughly 100 miles per hour. The Mercedes was headed toward the peninsula’s end, reports say, and officers knew there would be no place for the Mercedes to continue away after that.
Officers began to pursue the Mercedes again after it turned around on Balboa Boulevard, and was traveling north. According to Olivera, the vehicle went out of the driver’s control, and it smashed with force against a tree. The force of the crash broke the Mercedes in two, with the engine landing 100 feet from the crash site.
Responders arrived and pronounced the driver deceased at the incident site. He was identified only as in his late twenties. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Responders transported a passenger to the hospital with injuries that were described as major. Her identity—including name, age, and city of residence—have not been reported.
Investigators are continuing their work to collect details and information to understand the circumstances of the crash.
