Two Men Identified as Victims Killed in Small Plane Crash in Newhall
NEWHALL, CA (March 18, 2020) – John Calvert and Kevin Solis were identified as the victims who were killed in a small place crash on Friday in Newhall, Sarah Ardalani said. Ardalani is a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.
The March 13 incident occurred when the plane the two victims were traveling in—described as a single-engine Mooney M20—crashed close to Weldon Canyon road and I-5 northbound.
Calvert was a resident of Valencia, 77 years old.
Solis was a resident of Fontana, 36 years old.
The plane had been heading to Van Nuys Airport, according to Ian Gregor. Gregor is a spokesperson with the Federal Aviation Administration. According to Gregor, the plane disappeared from radar at roughly 1:50 p.m.
Reports first came in to the fire department of a crashed airplane at roughly 2:55 p.m., and rescuers searched for hours for the accident site. The terrain was reported as difficult and remote. At roughly 5:12 p.m., responders found the crashed plane.
Both occupants of the plane had died.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are gathering details and information to understand what caused the crash.
